What Makes a Modern Library Website?

A library website is often the first place patrons interact with their library.

They may be looking for today’s opening hours, searching for an event, registering for a program, finding a branch, looking for a resource, or simply trying to figure out how to renew a book.

A modern library website needs to make all of those things easy.

But a good library website is about more than simply looking modern.

Information should be easy to find

The most attractive website in the world isn’t useful if patrons can’t find what they’re looking for.

Library websites need clear navigation, logical organization, effective search, and content that is easy to understand.

Important information — hours, locations, events, services, contact information, and resources — should never feel buried.

Your website should work for staff, too

A website isn’t only a tool for patrons.

Library staff are responsible for keeping information accurate and up to date. That means the tools behind the website matter just as much as the website itself.

Staff should be able to update content, create events, manage forms, publish announcements, and maintain location information without needing to call a developer every time something changes.

Accessibility isn’t optional

Libraries serve everyone.

A modern library website should be designed with accessibility in mind from the beginning — including keyboard navigation, readable content, appropriate contrast, meaningful structure, responsive layouts, and compatibility with assistive technologies.

Accessibility isn’t simply a technical requirement. It’s part of making library services available to the entire community.

A library website should connect to everything else

Your website shouldn’t exist in isolation.

Events, programs, locations, forms, online services, analytics, and library systems all contribute to the digital experience a patron has with your library.

The more effectively these systems can work together, the less staff have to maintain information in multiple places.

That’s one of the ideas behind LibreeWeb and the broader Libree ecosystem: library technology should work together rather than creating more disconnected systems.

The best website is the one that gets out of the way

Patrons shouldn’t have to think about how a library’s technology works.

They should simply be able to find what they need and get on with it.

For staff, the experience should be much the same: straightforward tools that make managing the library’s digital presence easier rather than more complicated.

That’s what we think a modern library website should do.
